17 April 2008: BASF SE has announced plans for a significant expansion of its production plant for the biodegradable plastic Ecoflex® at the company’s Ludwigshafen site. The move will raise Ecoflex production capacities from the current 14,000 by 60,000 metric tons per year. Production at the expanded plant will commence in the third quarter of 2010. 8 April 2008 - Canadian company Container Corp is using an experimental high melt flow and high clarity PP resin from LyondellBasell in commercial production of its Enviroclear Barrier System range of hot fill jars and bottles. The container manufacturer and resin producer have worked together to develop the new resin – Pro-Fax X11540-81-3, which is claimed to provide PET-like levels of clarity in the bottle without the use of peroxide melt flow enhancement. 1/April/2008: Total Petrochemicals announces that its joint-venture with Samsung, Samsung Total Petrochemicals, will build a polypropylene compounding facility in Dongguan, which is in the Pearl River area of Guangdong province, in the South of China.
The project supports Samsung Total Petrochemical’s strategy to maintain and advance its current leadership position in the higher value-added sector of the polypropylene compounds market. This added capacity will allow the Company to market about 20% of its total polypropylene production in the form of compounds while improving service to the customer through local production. The investment amounts to € 6 million. Completion is forecast for early 2009. The facility, comprised of three lines, will have a total capacity of 28,000 tons per year. The products will supply the south China market, targeting the Electronics and Household Electrical Appliances sector including refrigerators, dishwashers and air conditioners. 28/March/2008: Braskem announced the first certified linear polyethylene in the world made from 100% renewable raw materials, confirming its technological leadership in the production of green polymers and its commitment to sustainable development. 25/Mar/2008: BASF’s latest biodegradable plastic material Ecobras is a blend of the firm’s Ecoflex aliphatic aromatic co-polyester and a “vegetable polymer” derived from corn flour.The new material has been developed by BASF Brazil together with the Brazilian subsidiary of Corn Products International and has 50% naturally reoccurring material content - as opposed to 45% for Ecovio. 25/Mar/2008: The Ukrainian petrochemicals company Karpatneftekhim, part of Russia’s Lukoil Group chemicals division Lukor-Neftekhim, has begun construction of a new PVC plant in Kulush, Ukraine. Run by Lukoil’s Ukrainian Zao Lukor subsidiary, the Kulush-based firm is investing the equivalent of $210m (£135m) to establish the Ukraine’s first PVC production facility with planned capacity of 300,000tpa.
